What do you get included with a Model S and X
This article covers the charging equipment included in Model S and X up to an including 2021. For second hand cars, this can vary depending on what was lost, kept or damaged by the previous owner.
Tesla 6M Universal Mobile Connector (UMC) with a 3 pin UK adapter
Allowing you to plug into any home 3 pin 13amp socket, in theory, this can get you 6 miles of range per hour of charge or 2.3kW max charging. Ideal for nights away at friends & family etc or when visiting AirBnb locations etc.
There are two versions of this connector – see our other article to identify the differences, the circular bag version being the original “Gen 1” and was provided until May 2019 when it was replaced by the square bagged “Gen 2”
Blue Commando adapter for the above Tesla UMC
This plugs into the above UMC and allows up to 7.4kW of power, it’s recommended that you get a Commando socket installed at any locations you will be visiting often but not daily.
Mennekes Type 2 Cable
This allows you to plug into any Type 2 socket at home (if you don’t have a tethered charger) or at AC public chargers. From standard 7kW supermarket or home chargers you will get about 25 miles per hour. Most Model S and X can accept up to 11kW, and earlier models could be specified with an optional 16kW onboard charger so can make good use of the 22kW AC units that can be found in some locations.

CCS Enabled Charging
Most Model S and X have now had CCS charging enabled by their current or previous owner (you can confirm this on the central screen inside the car) and an adaptor is required. This is a highly recommended upgrade as it gives you access to ALL Tesla chargers and not just the older “V2” units (the ones with two cables), but also the pubic charging network too.
If the adaptor has been misplaced, they can be obtained from the Tesla app as a spare part, or if the car has not been converted, you can arrange this via a Tesla service centre. Sometimes the missing adaptors appear on online auctions, though third party ones can sometimes be unreliable so we recommend going for Tesla branded one.
